THIS WEEK

AT NORTHSIDE

Palm Sunday

Sunday, April 13

I know we have a lot of sports fans at Northside, which makes it fun to incorporate sports illustrations and jokes into the message. One of the more recent developments across the history of sports is instant replay. I say recent - regular use of instant replay has been around for nearly 20 years. In instant replay, officials have the chance to slow a play down, study it and determine the correct call. It's amazing to think how many games would have had a different outcome had instant replay been used or not used.

I bring up instant replay and particularly slowing actions down to highlight what's happening in the Gospel of Matthew. The first 20 chapters of Matthew encapsulates 33+ years of Jesus' life and ministry. Chapters 21-28 cover 10 days. When you get to chapter 21, Matthew figurately hits the biblical brake so that we can really pay attention to the action in front of us.

For those of you who grew up in church, Matthew 21 is a familiar scene. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, His disciples, followers and those in the community wave palm branches and welcome Him as a conquering hero. There were others in the crowd who didn't know who Jesus was and there were religious leaders present who were incensed by what they were seeing.

The significance of this moment cannot be understated. Matthew is slowing the scene down for us to make sure we don't miss anything. The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey was prophesied in scripture, specifically in Zechariah and in Daniel and when you slow the scene down and replay what was prophesied many years before Jesus' time on earth, you begin to see just how right God is.

This Sunday, we're going to read the familiar story of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. But we're also going to look back and Daniel and see how prophecy was fulfilled. It's pretty amazing what biblical replay can show us. I hope you'll join me this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am as we celebrate Palm Sunday!

April Ministry Spotlight

Compassion International

About Us

Jesus Cares About Children. So Do We. We are child advocates, dedicated to releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name. Through sponsorships and donations, we empower local churches to love, care for and protect children in poverty so they're free to learn, grow, play and dream. But we don't just meet a child's physical, mental and emotional needs. We also care for them spiritually by introducing them to the gospel. While children living in poverty face many challenges, eternal hope is found in Jesus. And it's Compassion's mission to share him with those in need.

How Can I Help?

The ministry works with thousands of local churches around the world, and each church partner tailors our holistic child development model to the contextualized needs of the children in its community, to best deliver the whole-life care the children need. They work primarily through child sponsorship but also have specific initiatives to help babies and mothers, to develop future leaders, and to meet critical needs.
