The Judges: An Introduction

Sunday, May 4

Can you remember an experience or time in your life that lacked direction, rules or guardrails? For some, I would imagine they could think back to their teenage or young adult years and remember there not being many rules. For others, they might think of a time in their career that they or the place where they worked lacked direction, focus or accountability. It can be hard to move forward when you're feeling listless and not anchored to anything.

This Sunday, we're starting a series that's going to carry us through the Old Testament book of Judges. As a little preview, Judges can read a little bit like a tragedy. Following the death of Joshua, who had led the Israelites into the Promised Land, there's a generation that does not follow the way of their parents. In essence, they live with an attitude of "everyone doing what's right in their own eyes."

This ultimately leads to a cycle of partial obedience to God, sin, oppression, repentance, God's deliverance through a judge, peace, complacency and then back to partial obedience and sin. It's a cycle that I imagine a lot of us can identify with.

I hope you will join me this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am as we start a new series with an introduction to the Book of Judges. This series will show us that though it can be chaotic living in a time when people are doing what's right in their own eyes, that God can and does use the most unlikely of people to accomplish His will.
