Jesus On Accountability

Sunday, September 15

As we've been journeying through our annual Chest of Joash series, we've been exploring some principles that Jesus addresses when it comes to our giving. Two weeks ago, we looked at the principle of ownership with a reminder to not forget God in our blessings. Last week, we talked about the responsibility that comes in our giving, particularly among those who are without. Jesus reminds us that we don't give to be seen by others, but be encouraged that God sees us.

This Sunday, we're diving in to the Parable of the Talents. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of three individuals who were entrusted with a differing amounts of talents. Two of the individuals invested their talents and saw a return. The third individual buried their talent in hopes of not losing it. Ultimately, the individual who buried their talent is judged harshly and has their talent taken away.

The implication is pretty clear. Everyone of us has been given talents. And from Jesus' story, there's accountability for how we use or don't use them. Investing our talents (time, talents and treasure) honors the Lord, but it also does something in our lives. Anytime we see a return on an investment, our hearts are filled with joy. Think of those times when you served someone and you received the greater blessing. Think about those times that you gave someone more time than you think you had, but the return on that investment brought a peace that you did the right thing. Those kinds of stories go on and on.

Each of us are accountable - not to have the same number of talents, but to invest what we've been given. As we dive in to scripture this Sunday, allow the Lord to show you the talents He's given you - and how you can invest them for His Kingdom.
